Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Students can use all of the help that they can get when fighting the tests. Here is a list of various ways to support and encourage students as adult allies.

  • Start a class discussion about standardized tests.
  • Send a memo out to students and parents about the dangers of the tests.
  • Convene a meeting of school staff about challenging the tests.
  • Have your class write letters to the state department of education.
  • Refuse to give the tests to students who don't want to take it.

  • Write letters to administrators and elected officials expressing your concerns about the tests.
  • Take legal action against the testing policies of the state or the school.
  • Advocate for legal opt-out laws in your state.
  • Set up a parental network that works against the tests and coordinates test boycotts.
  • Sponsor a forum or teach-in around testing issues.

Parents and teachers:

  • Form a local coalition working to fight the tests.
  • Meet with local and state representatives to discuss alternatives to high-stakes tests.
  • Write letters to the editor in local newspapers on the issue.
  • Vocally attend board of education meetings.
